What is a Gravatar?
Gravatar stands for "Globally Recognized Avatar" - a free web service that allows users to create a profile associated with an email address. Once a Gravatar is registered, it displays consistently across all Gravatar-enabled websites using that email. Our Gravatar Checker tool helps you find Gravatars associated with any email address and view them in various styles without needing to create a profile yourself.
Why Use Gravatars?
- Consistency: Your avatar appears the same everywhere using one upload
- Easy Setup: No need to upload avatars on every website individually
- Networking: Build a universal online identity across platforms
- Professional: Create a polished image for business communications
- Time-Saving: Update once, reflect everywhere instantly
- Privacy Control: Manage what profile information is public
How Gravatar Works
When you set up a Gravatar, you upload a profile image to gravatar.com and associate it with your email address. Gravatar converts your email into an MD5 hash, which websites can use to fetch your profile picture. When WordPress, Disqus, or other Gravatar-enabled sites detect a user's email, they hash it and retrieve the associated avatar automatically.
Default Avatar Options
If an email address doesn't have a Gravatar registered, services use default avatars. Mystery Person (MP) shows a gray silhouette. Identicon generates unique abstract patterns. Monster ID creates cute monsters. Wavatar produces wave patterns. Retro creates 8-bit pixel art. Robohash generates robot images. Blank shows a transparent image. Our tool lets you preview how any email would look with each style.
Creating Your Own Gravatar
To create a Gravatar, visit gravatar.com and sign up with your email address. Upload your profile picture and add information like website, location, and bio. Your avatar immediately becomes available to all Gravatar-enabled sites. You can manage privacy settings to control what profile information is publicly visible. Consider using a professional photo for business contexts and a personal photo for creative communities.
